Protecting Our Oceans: A Cause Close to My Heart By Amritaya Silva
Being part of the Lions Club of Colombo Continental Ambassadors has always meant more than service to me it represents purpose, connection, and the ability to create meaningful change. Our recent project focused on Life Below Water (SDG 14) was one of those experiences that truly stayed with me.
Standing by the ocean with my fellow Lions, holding our Sri Lankan flag, I felt a deep sense of responsibility. In that moment, it became so clear that the ocean is not just something we admire it is something that sustains us. It provides oxygen, supports livelihoods, and plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of our planet.
Yet, despite everything it gives us, it is often overlooked.
This initiative was not just about awareness it was about perspective. Being physically present, seeing the waves and the shoreline, makes you reflect deeply. It makes you ask yourself: What kind of future are we creating? And what role do we play in shaping it?
As someone who embraces lifestyle entrepreneurship, I strongly believe that the way we live and the choices we make every day should reflect responsibility and mindfulness. Sustainability is not just a concept—it’s a way of living with intention. This project reminded me that even the smallest habits can contribute to a much larger impact.
What stood out most to me was the sense of unity. People from different walks of life coming together with a shared purpose—to protect something greater than ourselves. That is the true essence of being a Lion.
Our oceans are not separate from us they are deeply connected to our survival. Protecting them means protecting our future, our environment, and the generations to come.
This experience reminded me that change doesn’t always begin with something big. Sometimes, it starts with awareness, with intention, and with a simple decision to care.
And when we come together as Lions, even the smallest actions can create waves of lasting impact.
The ocean gives us life protecting it is not a choice, it is our responsibility.”
